Aerial Adventure Day 2016

Posted on April 3rd, 2016 by Hayley

On Easter Monday a group of Scouts and older Cubs visited Woodhouse Scout Activity Centre for a day of adventure. In spite of the forecasted storm we trekked out, and were rewarded with a gorgeous sunny day. We did climbing and aerial trek in the morning and afternoon, cooked twists on open fires for lunch, and rounded off the day with some orienteering.

Our Beavers need you

Posted on March 9th, 2016 by Mike_Provis

1st Clevedon Scouts are currently looking for volunteers to fill the positions of Beaver leader and/or assistant leaders to help run the Waverly Beavers that meet at 6pm on Thursdays.

The sessions last for an hour and are during term time only. They are lots of fun for the kids and for the leaders, assistants and parent helpers. There will be lots of opportunities to do all sorts of fun things including crafts, cooking, outdoor hikes and games, camping sleepovers, Christmas carol singing – too many to mention here.

There are also new leaders for the 1st Clevedon Brunel Beaver colony that are currently going through training, so there will be plenty of help to get you up and running. We won’t throw you in on your own – we’ll be with you every step of the way until you feel confident enough to take over.

It’s a great time to join the 1st Clevedon Scouting family as a volunteer as there are exciting new changes within the group to improve the facilities, introduce new processes and make things easier to run the individual groups/units.

Please check out the pages of our new website to get more information on who we are and what we do.

If you would like more info on the available positions, please leave a comment or contact us.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers

Posted on February 1st, 2016 by Mike_Provis

1st Clevedon Scouts are collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers in 2016 so please save them and drop them off at the Scout hut whenever you can.

The earlier a child learns to eat well and keep active, the more likely they are to live well too. That’s why your support for Active Kids can make such a difference to children’s futures. So collect as many vouchers as you can to help us to get our hands on some exciting new sports and cooking equipment and experiences for our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

It’s easy to collect vouchers for Active Kids 2016. Simply shop in Sainsbury’s stores and online at sainsburys.co.uk and you will earn Active Kids vouchers on your shopping.

In Sainsbury’s Locals, you will get one voucher for every £5 you spend. You’ll notice these vouchers are larger than the ones you receive in Sainsbury’s supermarkets and have a photograph on them.

In Sainsbury’s Supermarkets you’ll receive 1 voucher for every £10 you spend. So if you spend £40 you’ll get four vouchers, but what’s new is that they’ll all be printed on one piece of paper. These vouchers are white and smaller in size, with no photograph on them.

Once you’ve collected your vouchers, bring them in to the Scout hut and deposit them in the box in the hallway.

If you’d like to see what great equipment and activities we could order, take a look at this year’s catalogue.

Christmas Scout Post 2015

Posted on January 24th, 2016 by Mike_Provis

The 2015 scout Christmas post was a huge success thanks to a combination of busy scout members, willing volunteers and of course the festive paying public.

Temporary racking was setup in the scout hut to help sort out all of the post into defined postal rounds. Busy volunteers beavered away at sorting out all of the collected letters with our special Christmas stamp, ready for yet more willing volunteers to pick up and deliver around Clevedon.

A total of £XXX was raised which will go towards the new kitchen which is being installed early 2016.

Our deepest gratitude and a huge pat on the back to everyone involved – hope to see you again next year.

The build up to the event was covered by the local paper/website North Somerset Times – take a look here

A Million Hands

Posted on August 27th, 2015 by Edward Callow

Half a million young people committed to removing social barriers, connecting communities and improving lives.

We want to mobilise half a million Scouts in support of four social issues chosen by our young people. From dementia to those disabled by society, from improving the mental wellbeing and resilience of our communities to ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to clean water and sanitation…These are big issues of our time, but our young people want to tackle them head on.

Our aim is to build real and lasting relationships in communities that will enable young people to continue taking social action long into the future. We are marrying our Movement of over half a million people, reaching into every community across the UK, with the knowledge and expertise of organisations committed to social change.

For more information please visit the A Million Hands website.

T-minus one month until the trip of a lifetime

Posted on June 26th, 2015 by Edward Callow

Countdown nears its end for Scouts from Clevedon heading to The World Scout Jamboree

Across the planet Scouts, from nearly every country and territory are busy preparing for their trip to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree. Amongst them are 36 Scouts from Avon who have spent over 18 months planning, raising funds and training to take part in the greatest adventure of their lifetime, the World Scout Jamboree which takes place this summer in Japan.

This included a recent bag pack, kindly hosted by Sainsbury’s Portishead for the Scouts and their supporters from the troop. This resulted in donations from generous shoppers totalling £455 towards their adventure.

Chief Scout, Bear Grylls said:
While lots of people know that Scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realise that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement. The World Scout Jamboree is a great example of this. Over the course of the Jamboree Scouts will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light. That is why Scouting is one of the greatest youth movement on earth and why I am so proud to be part of it.

Between the opening and closing ceremonies, participants will have the opportunity to take part in literally hundreds of activities focused on discovering new cultures, the environment, sustainable development and global development issues.

Taking a break from the vibrant main Jamboree site with its 30,000 participants the Avon group will also take part in a moving visit to the Peace Park in the Centre of Hiroshima. This part of the Jamboree programme will take Scouts in mixed groups from almost every nation on earth to experience the solemn and reflective atmosphere created in the Peace Park.

The World Scout Jamboree runs until 8th August. The Scouts from Clevedon will also be visiting the homes of other Scouts in Aichi as well as spending a few days in Tokyo before returning to the UK.

For more information on Avonushi, the Scout’s unit, visit their website avonushi.org.uk or their Facebook and Twitter profiles.
